Aquilegia are quintessential cottage garden favourites often known as grannys bonnet or columbine. They are easy to grow and will self-seed so are great for naturalistic or wild gardens and informal spaces. The nectar-rich flowers are attractive to bumblebees.

Sow in a seed tray in spring or early summer and prick out into individual small pots or modules. Plant out when large enough. They should flower in their second year.
